Best Bot-Free AI Note Takers in 2026, Compared

Granola, Circleback, Jamie and Bluedot all record without a bot. They differ on training defaults, data residency and what you get back, and Hedy is the on-device option.

The short answer: for privacy, live help during the call and the least data leaving your machine, Hedy is the best bot-free AI note taker. Among the four dedicated cloud tools, Circleback has the strongest fundamentals, Jamie is the pick for EU data residency, Granola has the best hybrid notes but trains on your data by default, and Bluedot is the only one that gives you video clips.

Two years ago the AI notetaker was a bot. It appeared in your participant list with a name like “Fred’s Notetaker,” everyone acknowledged it awkwardly, and that was the deal. That model is now in trouble. Microsoft Teams flags unverified external bots, and Google Meet keeps third-party notetakers out by default; we covered what that did to the Google Meet ecosystem. A capture method that depends on a platform’s permission is one that can be revoked.

So bot-free capture, recording from your own machine’s audio with nothing joining the call, has gone from a differentiator to a requirement. The capture method barely separates the tools. What separates them is everything downstream.

Where the four cloud tools differ

The training default. This is the biggest gap and it is invisible in a feature comparison. Circleback, Jamie and Bluedot state plainly that they do not train models on customer data. Jamie goes further and deletes the audio once it has the transcript. Granola is the outlier: it trains on de-identified meeting data by default. Any user can turn that off in Settings, but a default nobody changes is the default that governs, and only the Enterprise tier has it off from the start and enforceable by an admin.

That default is no longer just a preference. On 30 July 2026 a proposed class action, Chamberlain v. Granola, alleged that Granola recorded a non-user on a Teams or Zoom call without notice and used the content to train models. The case is at the pleading stage; we wrote up the filing separately. If you record client work, the training default plus the litigation should probably decide this for you before you look at anything else. (For a head-to-head, see Granola vs Hedy and our Granola vs Circleback comparison.)

Whether you get the recording back. Granola and Jamie keep text. Circleback keeps audio and video playback. Bluedot records screen and video and lets you cut shareable clips, which nothing else here does. For a sales team that needs to send a 40-second customer quote to a product manager, that is the job.

Timing. All four are post-meeting products. Jamie is explicit that there is no live transcription or in-meeting assistance, and Granola, Circleback and Bluedot offer no live coaching either. If you want something happening during the conversation, none of these four is it. Hedy is the exception: it shows a live transcript and live coaching suggestions while recording on your own device, and it is the only tool in our rankings that can run the full pipeline on-device on supported hardware.

Platform coverage. Granola covers Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Apple Watch. Circleback covers Mac, Windows, web, iOS, Android and Apple Watch. Jamie covers Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Bluedot covers Chrome, Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and Apple Watch.

Price. Granola’s Business plan is $14 per user per month. Bluedot starts at $14 billed annually ($18 monthly). Circleback has a permanent free plan, and Pro is $15 per user per month billed annually ($18 monthly). Jamie’s Plus plan is $24 a month. All four offer a free way in, so it is worth trying two before you pay.

The Bluedot question

Bluedot scores lowest of the four, and the reason is narrower than it first looks.

It is not the data handling. Bluedot’s security page states that customer data is never used to train or improve AI models, and claims SOC 2 Type II, AES-256 encryption and GDPR controls. On that measure it sits level with Circleback and Jamie, and ahead of Granola. It is not the capture method either: all four record without a bot and none announces itself to other participants.

What separates Bluedot is what it puts first. Its brand line is “Invisible, privacy-first AI note taker.” When the leading word is invisible, the implied benefit is that the other side won’t notice, and that is exactly what a user must not lean on. Bluedot does have a consent FAQ and doesn’t tell anyone to skip disclosure. This is a criticism of emphasis, not instruction. But a product whose lawful use depends on the user volunteering something the branding treats as concealable starts its customers off in the wrong direction.

The obligation is real and sits with you. Many jurisdictions require every participant to agree before recording, and under GDPR one participant’s consent has never covered the others. Recording a job interview without telling the candidate can be unlawful depending on where you and the candidate are. Use Bluedot if you want the video and clips, which are the best of the four, and set your own disclosure habit on top of it. For the wider picture, see why meeting bots feel awkward.

How to choose

Maximum privacy, or anything live: Hedy. Speech recognition stays on your device, no bot joins, and the free plan lets you test it. See our privacy guide.

Client or confidential work in the cloud: Circleback, for the no-training commitment, SOC 2 Type II and a BAA on Enterprise. Jamie if the data must stay in the EU.

European teams under GDPR: Jamie, or Hedy with EU residency. Jamie is the only one of the four with German processing and audio deletion after transcription.

Sales and recruiting: Bluedot, for video clips, with a disclosure habit you set yourself.

Personal notes, back-to-back days: Granola. The hybrid note is pleasant to use. Know what the training default means for anything sensitive.

The thing the four don’t do

All four wait until you stop talking. That is a design choice, and nearly the whole cloud bot-free category has converged on it: an excellent record of a conversation you have already finished having. That helps the next meeting and does nothing for the one you are in.

If better notes are what you want, any of these four will give you them, and Circleback will give you the best ones. If a better meeting is what you want, you want a live tool: Hedy surfaces questions and follow-ups while the conversation is still running. For Google Meet specifically, see the Google Meet guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best bot-free AI note taker? +
For privacy and live help during the call, Hedy: it records system audio with no bot, runs speech recognition on your device, and shows live coaching suggestions. Among cloud tools, Circleback has the strongest fundamentals, Jamie suits EU data residency, Granola has the best hybrid notes, and Bluedot is the only one that gives you video clips.
Granola vs Circleback: which should I choose? +
Circleback, for most people. It states it doesn't train on customer data, keeps audio and video for playback, offers a permanent free plan with 30 days of history, and Pro is $15 per user per month billed annually. Granola costs $14 per user per month and has the more pleasant hybrid notepad, but it trains on de-identified data by default and a proposed class action over its silent capture is pending.
Do bot-free notetakers need everyone's consent? +
Yes. Recording without a bot removes the only signal that told other people they were being recorded, so the duty to tell them falls on you. Some jurisdictions require all participants to agree, and under GDPR one person's consent doesn't cover the others. Say out loud that you are recording at the start of every call.
Which bot-free notetaker keeps data in the EU? +
Jamie processes in Germany and deletes the audio after transcription. Hedy lets you choose EU or US data residency at signup, and with Local AI on supported hardware the AI step can stay on your device. Bluedot says EU data residency is supported. Granola stores data in the US only.
Is there a bot-free AI notetaker that works live during the call? +
Hedy is the clearest example: it shows a live transcript and live coaching suggestions during the meeting while recording on your own device. Granola, Circleback, Jamie and Bluedot all produce notes after the meeting. Bluedot and Jamie have no live features at all.
Is there a free bot-free AI note taker? +
Yes. Hedy's free plan gives 5 hours of meetings a month, and Circleback's free plan covers unlimited online and in-person meetings with 30 days of history. Jamie's free plan allows 10 notes a month of up to 30 minutes each, and Bluedot's gives 5 meetings for the life of the account.
