Granola vs Otter.ai 2026: Which Should You Choose?

Granola vs Otter.ai in 2026: bot-free notepad against bot-based transcription platform, compared on processing, platforms, price, training and recent lawsuits.

The short answer: Choose Granola if you take your own notes and want bot-free capture with AI expanding them (the free plan shows 30 days of history; Business is $14 per user per month). Choose Otter.ai if you want automatic live transcription for the whole team (Pro $8.33 per month billed annually). Both process audio in the cloud, and both train on de-identified data by default. If you want bot-free capture with on-device transcription, Hedy is the alternative.

Granola and Otter.ai represent two philosophies. Granola is a notepad: you write during the meeting and the AI fills in what was actually said. Otter is a platform: it joins, transcribes and summarizes with no effort from you. Facts here were re-checked against each vendor’s documentation on October 14, 2026. For a score-by-score view, see the Granola vs Otter.ai comparison.

Granola: the bot-free notepad

You type rough notes during the meeting, and Granola uses the full transcript to expand them. The result reads as your notes, not a transcript dump. It has a polished native feel, AI chat across past meetings (even on the free plan), and no bot. Business adds unlimited history, integrations, MCP and API access.

Weaknesses: there is no browser app, no true offline mode, and the free plan shows only the last 30 days. It is a notepad first, so it suits people who actually take notes.

Otter.ai: the automated platform

Otter joins your calls, transcribes live and produces summaries and action items, with a voice-activated Meeting Agent, a searchable archive and team workspaces. It works on web, Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. It also has a bot-free desktop app, though the bot is the default.

Weaknesses: everything runs in the cloud, there is no offline mode, the free plan is tight, and it trains on de-identified data by default.

Privacy: neither is as private as it looks

This was the least accurate part of our earlier version of this post, so plainly: Granola is not “mostly local.” Audio is captured on your device, but transcription and AI both run in the cloud. Both tools train on de-identified data by default. Granola lets anyone opt out in Settings; Otter documents no self-serve opt-out.

Both are also in litigation. A proposed class action against Granola (Chamberlain v. Granola, N.D. Cal., filed 30 July 2026) targets its silent capture and default training; it is at the pleading stage, and none of it has been decided. In August 2026 the court let a privacy class action against Otter proceed in part. Details: Granola lawsuit explained and the Otter.ai ruling. In both cases you remain responsible for telling the room you are recording.

Head-to-head for Mac users

Experience. Granola’s native interface is its strongest selling point. Otter works fine, but it is a web-first product.

Feature depth. Otter has live transcription, agents, team sharing and a searchable archive. Granola’s AI chat across past meetings is strong, but it has no live coaching and fewer team features on lower plans.

Automation. Otter needs nothing from you. Granola works best when you take notes.

Consider Hedy if you want bot-free capture and on-device transcription

Hedy is a native app on Mac that also runs on iOS, Windows and Android. Like Granola it captures system audio without a bot, so it works with Zoom, Meet, Teams, Webex and phone calls. Unlike either tool here, its speech recognition runs on your device, and on supported hardware (such as Apple Silicon Macs) the AI does too, so the full pipeline can run offline; otherwise AI runs in Hedy’s EU or US cloud or Apple Private Cloud Compute. It does not train on your data, records in-person meetings from a phone or Apple Watch, and gives live coaching suggestions. Integrations are lighter than Otter’s, with no native CRM connector, and it does not have Granola’s hybrid notepad. See Granola vs Hedy and Granola alternatives.

Our recommendation

Choose Granola if: you like taking notes, want no bot, and will use the training opt-out.

Choose Otter.ai if: you want automatic, live, team-wide transcription and accept the bot, the cloud and the training default.

Choose Hedy if: you want bot-free capture, on-device transcription, live coaching or fully local processing on supported hardware.
