Fathom Review 2026: Is the Free Plan Worth It?
Is Fathom really free? What the free plan includes, what is capped, how it handles your data, HIPAA, bot-free limits, and what the Superhuman acquisition changes.
The short answer: Yes, Fathom’s free plan is the most generous we have found: unlimited recording, transcription and storage, with only the advanced AI summaries capped. The catch is data. Fathom trains its own models on de-identified meetings unless you opt out in My Settings, and since September 2026 it is owned by Superhuman. If you want a bot-free, on-device alternative, Hedy is the one to look at.
In a market where most AI meeting assistants charge $15 to $30 a month, Fathom’s pitch is hard to ignore. This post answers the questions people actually search: is it free, is it any good, is it safe, and what is the catch. Facts were re-checked on October 14, 2026. For the full scored review, see the Fathom review page.
What has changed since this review was first written
- Training default. Fathom uses de-identified customer data to improve its own AI models by default. Opt out in My Settings; Team Edition admins can opt out everyone. This replaced our earlier “no catch” conclusion.
- Bot-free capture is available but is a Mac-only beta.
- Superhuman (formerly Grammarly) acquired Fathom on 14 September 2026. See what changes and what does not.
How Fathom works
Fathom connects to your Google or Outlook calendar and joins Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams calls as a bot, and it also captures Slack Huddles. On a Mac, the desktop app can capture bot-free (beta). Afterwards you get a recording, transcript and AI summary in your dashboard. Setup takes a couple of minutes.
What you get on the free plan
- Unlimited recording, transcription and storage
- Instant AI summaries, with a limited number of advanced AI summaries
- Limited Ask Fathom access
- Highlights, clips and a searchable archive
Advanced summary templates, AI action items and account-wide Ask Fathom move to paid tiers. Premium is $16 per month billed annually ($20 monthly), with Team and Business plans above it. Business adds custom data-retention controls.
Quality
Transcription covers 38 languages and is competitive with Otter.ai and Fireflies.ai on clear audio. Summaries are structured (overview, key points, action items, follow-ups) and clean, which is Fathom’s strongest feature. Speaker identification is more reliable when participants have named accounts than for guests or dial-ins. Fathom also shows live summaries in the desktop app.
Where Fathom falls short
The bot. The default is a visible “Fathom Notetaker” participant. Bot-free capture is Mac-only and in beta.
Platforms. Zoom, Meet, Teams and Slack Huddles only. No Webex, phone calls or in-person recording; the iOS app is announced but not shipped.
Cloud only. All audio is processed on Fathom’s servers and stored in the United States. There is no offline mode.
Training. On by default, opt-out available.
Free plan caps. AI action items and advanced templates require a paid plan.
Is Fathom HIPAA compliant?
Yes, with a signed BAA, and it holds SOC 2 Type II and GDPR credentials. All data is stored in the US, with no EU option. See our healthcare guide for the options.

Consider Hedy if Fathom’s limits are dealbreakers
Hedy fits the readers Fathom does not: it captures system audio on your device with no bot on any desktop, works with Zoom, Meet, Teams, Webex and phone calls, records in-person meetings from a phone or Apple Watch, and gives live coaching suggestions. Speech recognition runs on your device, and on supported hardware the AI does too, so nothing has to leave your machine. It does not train on your data. The trade-off is that its free plan is 5 hours a month, not unlimited. See our Fathom alternatives and the privacy guide.
